Virtual Interview Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Zoom has become more and more common for interviews, and it’s important to be prepared to make a great impression.
Here are some common virtual interview mistakes and how to avoid them:
Technical Issues
We’ve all been there – the dreaded “unstable connection” message popping up right before a big interview. Don’t let tech issues sabotage your moment to shine! Before you hop on that video call, do a quick test run of your internet connection and find a cosy spot with a strong signal.
A clean and uncluttered background is always a good idea, whether it’s your actual workspace or a snazzy virtual one. Don’t forget to check the lighting! You want to make sure you’re well-lit and looking your best, so avoid those pesky backlighting situations.
Find a quiet corner or, ideally, your home office, where you can focus and mute your mic when you’re not speaking. Trust us, it’ll make a world of difference.
Preparation and Practice
Interview prep is key, whether it’s face-to-face or through a screen. Want to make a killer impression? Do your homework!
Research the company and the role like a detective, have some insightful questions ready to fire at the interviewer, and practice your answers to those classic interview questions. Don’t be shy about asking questions. It shows you’re genuinely interested in the role and the company.
Even though it’s virtual, dressing sharp is still a must. It shows you’re taking the interview seriously and are ready to impress. Sit up straight, make eye contact with the camera, and use hand gestures to emphasise your points.
During the Interview
Be a good listener, and don’t interrupt the interviewer; this will show great communication skills. Keep those multitasking urges in check and stay focused on the interview. Put your phones on silent and put them away, and resist the temptation to check your emails on another screen as well.
Clear and confident communication is key. Speak at a moderate pace, and make sure your voice is loud enough to be heard.
How To Follow Up After Your Interview
Sending a thank-you note is a courteous way to show your appreciation for the interviewer’s time. Send a thank-you within 24 hours of the interview, reiterating your interest in the role and the company.
There’s a fine line between showing enthusiasm and being overly persistent. Pestering the interviewer with calls or emails can hurt your chances of landing the job. So, keep it cool and professional – a simple follow-up message is all you need to show you’re still keen.
Additional Interview Tips
Be yourself: Relax and be yourself during the interview. The interviewer wants to get to know you and see if you’re a good fit for the role and the company.
Be positive and enthusiastic: Show your enthusiasm and passion for the role and the company.
Be honest: Answer the interviewer’s questions honestly and openly.
